Why, oh why, do people insist on doing these idiotic actions? The train always wins! Always! 

In the USA we have many grade crossings without barriers and/or flashing lights, particularly in rural areas. The train ALWAYS has the right of way. That happens to be the law in this country. 

Here is some perspective: the average freight train in the US is about 100 rail cars at 10,000 tons total. That comes to roughly over one mile of train length. At 55 miles per hour, with the emergency brake applied, it will take that train about a mile to stop. 

In this video one can hear the emergency brake being applied. As one can also see the train hardly slows. 

Nobody was injured. That is the really surprising part.
