It was announced today that the Connecticut Bond Commission is expected to approve a $1 million grant for the Shore Line Trolley Museum, in East Haven, Connecticut. The museum is the oldest operating trolley museum in the US. Originally know as the Branford Electric Railway Association, it began operation in March of 1947. The museum has reportedly amassed the third largest collection of trolleys in the country.
The museum is currently located in a tidal marsh, a short distance from Long Island Sound. In August 2011, Hurricane Irene flooded the property with over two feet of salt water. Almost all vehicles in the collection were damaged.
The money, including another $1 million raised by museum members, will be used to construct new track and car barns above the flood plains out of harms way.
